SIGN UP TO WALK...

The 2007/08 term is now over. The first UMWC walk of the 2008/09 Academic Year will be on Saturday 27th September.

THE NEWS AREA...

Summer Update

As most of the present club members are aware the club is closed for the summer period and walks will not commence until the start of the academic year in September.

For those freshers who are joining the university in September here is a little taster of what we will be up to:

  • Snowdon walk on the first weekend of term (27th and 28th)
  • Varity of away trips including Scotland and the Brecon Beacons
  • First aid courses
  • Evening social trips to places such as the fun centre
  • Summer BBQs
  • Costeering and possibly gorge walking.
  • A weekly walk on Saturdays with a different location each week.
  • Possibility to scramble.

The club will be present at serendipity on Thursday and Friday (24th and 25th) in freshers week where you will be able to join or renew club membership for £10!

We look forward to seeing all the new people in September, and bid farewell to those who have finished their degree and will not be returning to Bangor.

Oggie 8:

On 9th August 2008 The Oggie 8 Challenge will take place and this year a team from the walking club is taking part.

It is a one day walk taking in the Carneddau and Glyderau including Y Garn and Tryfan - that's eight 3000ft peaks in one day. The challenge is a 16 miles walk designed for experienced walkers. The challenge is open to teams of 4 to 6 people.

Good luck to those you who are participating in this event.

Hope everyone is having a good summer and see you in September.

Club Update

This is just a quick note to let you all know what is coming up in the near future:

This weeks walk is as usual but next weeks  (Saturday 24th) will be something a little different as we will be doing our annual Snowdon fancy dress walk.

Please make an effort to come along and impress the other club members with your fantastic costume!!

Also Friday 30th is our end of year meal which is being held at Pulcinella's Italian restaurant by the pier. If you are wanting to attend this event please see Smidge on Saturday (17th)  in The Tap and Spile at 8.30 on or alternatively Michael Lloyd in The Albion on Tuesday at 8.30pm to sign up.

A £5 deposit  is required to secure your place and you are free to chose what ever you would like from the menu (though you need to be willing to pay for it!!)

These dates will be your last chance to sign up.

Finally don't forget the beach party on Saturday 31st. This year we are providing a minibus which will cost £1 each and there are 14 places available. Please

see Smidge to secure your place. If you do not manage to get a place you can make your own way there as there is public transport to the beach.

The Au DInner

As you may or may not be aware the AU dinner took place on Friday (May 2nd) and a few members from the club attended.

The club was really successful at this years awards and won Club Of The Year 2008.

There were also numerous other individual achievements for the club to celebrate.

For those who are unaware what full and half colours are here is a brief description.

Well done to all those who won , you have all worked extremely hard over the past year.

Interested in becoming Leaders

Try to get on one of the training walks and talk to us about being approved.

As you may have heard we are making big changes to the way the clubs leaders are trained and how they are assessed. The short version is that all leaders for the club will now have to go through an approval process before they can lead groups. (Its only going to be your basic nav and group management should be pretty easy) Grab David, Nick or Rachel for more information.
